Biography

Dr. Ciesielski previously served as Vice Chair of Inpatient Safety and Quality in the Department of Medicine until June 2026 and currently serves as Executive Editor of the Washington Manual series. His research interests include medication safety, opioid medication safety, patient safety, patient progression, and inpatient operations. Dr. Ciesielski has published on identifiable risk factors for developing a diagnosis of opioid abuse and has presented ongoing improvement efforts in a primary care clinic focused on safer opioid prescribing.

Dr. Ciesielski’s clinical interests include general internal medicine, adult primary care, preventive care, and the management of chronic medical conditions. He also attends on the inpatient general internal medicine teaching service and serves as an associate program director in the internal medicine training program. He is interested in safety and quality education as well as leadership development.
