Trains fellows to lead the design, evaluation, and spread of evidence-based practices in real-world health systems, from ambulatory clinics to inpatient and hospital care, moving findings from efficacy to routine practice. Up to two fellows per cohort.

Fellows are anchored in the Center for Dissemination & Implementation (CDI), which supports more than $35M per year in externally funded implementation research and reaches approximately 1,000 faculty, trainees, and staff annually through its training programs.

Applied project
Fellows partner with clinical, operational, or community stakeholders on a real-world implementation project, typically embedded in an active CDI portfolio (HIV care engagement, antimicrobial and opioid stewardship, hospital care transitions and patient safety, asthma adherence).
Methodological contribution
Fellows contribute to implementation science methodology (measurement, fidelity assessment, mechanisms research) through CDI’s Dissemination and Implementation Research Core (DIRC) and an editorial internship at Implementation Science Communications.
Inpatient and hospital medicine
Inpatient and hospital medicine are a growing focus for implementation science at WashU. Hospitalists and other fellows can pursue inpatient implementation projects within the track, such as patient safety, care transitions, or stewardship initiatives, pairing IS methods and mentorship (Geng, Durkin) with the operational leadership of the Clinical Operations and Quality track.
