When you are admitted to the hospital, our hospital medicine experts provide medical care focused on your health, recovery and comfort.
Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients and managing complex medical conditions that require inpatient treatment.
Working closely with specialists, nurses, care managers and your primary care provider, our WashU Medicine hospitalists coordinate every aspect of your care during your hospital stay. They monitor your progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and help ensure a safe transition when you are ready to leave the hospital.
Hospital medicine services include:
- Diagnosis and treatment of acute medical conditions
- Management of chronic illnesses during hospitalization
- Coordination with specialists and care teams
- Daily monitoring and treatment planning
- Discharge planning and follow-up care coordination
Routine consultations are staffed daily, and emergent consultations are performed 24/7. Physicians from non-internal medicine services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital whose patients require internal medicine consultation should contact the medicine consult resident. Our hospitalists supervise the Internal Medicine Procedure Service elective at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The procedure service provides a variety of bedside procedures for patients throughout the hospital, including:
- Central venous access
- Thoracentesis
- Abdominal paracentesis
- Lumbar punctures

The Hospitalist Service is the general inpatient service run by hospitalists at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital (BJWCH). The hospitalists are board-certified or board-eligible physicians of WashU Medicine. Patients are referred from a variety of sources:
- Primary care physicians who directly admit patients or send them to the emergency department for care
- Emergency department physicians whose patients require admission but who do not have a primary physician with admitting privileges
- Physicians from outside hospitals whose patients require the more specialized services available at Barnes-Jewish Hospital
- Medical and surgical specialists at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital whose inpatients require management beyond their specialty area
The Hospitalist Service provides a full spectrum of medical coverage for inpatients continuously throughout the week.
To refer a patient to the Hospitalist Service, please call 314-362-1700 in advance of admission. Patients may be referred 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Physicians who wish to refer patients to Barnes-Jewish Hospital may prefer to call the Doctor’s Access Line at 1-800-252-3627, and request admission to the Hospitalist Service.
The Medicine Consult Service is the inpatient medicine consultation service that runs in collaboration with Barnes-Jewish Hospital internal medicine resident physicians. Inpatient medical consultation is performed by hospitalist physicians in conjunction with the Medicine Consult Service teaching service. The Medicine Consult Service provides expertise in a number of areas, with a focus on:
- Perioperative evaluation, risk stratification, and management
- Management of medical disease, including diabetes, hypertension, coronary, renal, and pulmonary disease
- Assistance in diagnostic evaluation
- Management of the unstable patient and transition to critical care
- Complications of medical therapy.

Our hospitalists provide inpatient care for established patients at Siteman Cancer Center.
People with cancer who are admitted to Parkview Tower are cared for in a collaborative care model with a hospitalist and medical oncologist. Our physicians work closely with cancer physicians to provide exceptional patient care. Our multi-disciplinary teams consist of:
- Hospitalists
- Hematologists
- Oncologists
- Nurse practitioners
- Inpatient nurse coordinators
- Research study coordinators
- Dieticians
- Case managers
- Social workers
We also work closely with our patients’ primary outpatient oncologists to ensure a smooth transition between care in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
In addition to treating general internal medicine needs of this unique patient population, our physicians care for patients enrolled in clinical trials, undergoing stem cell transplantations, and immune and cellular therapies.
Our hospitalist service directs medical care in the Progressive Pulmonary Care Unit. The Progressive Pulmonary Care Unit is a 9-bed unit that provides intensive nursing, respiratory and rehabilitative care for patients who:
- Patients who require long term mechanical ventilation (LTMV)
- Patients with primary severe pulmonary disease who need close monitoring and rehabilitation
We work closely with pulmonary care specialists in a collaborative effort to care for these complicated patients along with experts in nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition support, social work and case coordination.
Referrals are from current Pulmonary Division patients or ICU inpatients only.
Hospital medicine physicians provide internal medicine consultative support at The Rehabilitation Institute of Saint Louis, a 96-bed hospital providing comprehensive outpatient and acute inpatient rehabilitation services. Hospital medicine physicians are available to provide assistance with the management of a full spectrum of acute and chronic conditions to help contribute to the best possible functional outcome.
