On May 29, two of the Internal Medicine Residency’s Chief Residents presented at the second to last Medicine Grand Rounds for current residents’ academic year.
Francis Loh, MD and Karl Wallenkampf, MD, MA each gave a 25-minute talk on their chosen topic. Dr. Loh’s talk, titled “The Map Is Not the Territory: Improving Teaching Clinical Reasoning” discussed how to teach clinical reasoning to clinicians and helping them feel less lost when in residency. through a map he calls “ROBCART”.
ROBCART is a simple mapping system to solve a patient’s medical problem in a way that’s manageable to be solved. ROBCART’s acronyms are broken into: Real, Onset, Baseline, Characterize, Associated sxs, Red Flags, and Thoughts. This method is a hypothesis tool in order for a clinician to get to the next level in solving patients’ medical issues in an effective yet simple manner.
Dr. Wallenkampf’s talk titled, “The Search for a Good Pleth: Knowing and Caring in Medicine”, discussed what is the best call to make and how to make it when caring for patients in the medical field through three different pleth levels: The Reliable Pleth (beginning), The Confounding Pleth (middle), and The Whole Pleth (end).
