WashU Hospital Medicine has a long tradition of excellence in patient care, teaching and scholarship.
Established in 2000 with the mission to provide outstanding care to hospitalized patients and education of learners, our service has grown exponentially to include 140+ faculty and almost two dozen advance practice clinicians. Hospital Medicine has nearly 500 patient encounters every day across multiple locations.
Faculty in the Section of Hospital Medicine are involved in education, research, innovation, and career development across WashU Medicine. Our hospitalists lead patient safety and quality improvement initiatives; contribute the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics; and hold leadership roles at the university, hospital, healthcare system and national levels.

Our hospitalists specialize in caring for hospitalized patients and managing complex medical conditions that require inpatient treatment. We work with a multidisciplinary team including WashU Medicine physicians, BJC HealthCare and other partners to deliver exceptional care.

Hospital Medicine is a central component of the internal medicine residency program at WashU Medicine. We train future leaders in bedside procedures, management of post-surgical patients and operative risk assessments, among other key areas of knowledge.

APP Fellowship
Our Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Hospital Medicine Fellowship prepares trainees to deliver exceptional care within interdisciplinary inpatient clinical teams. The aim of the APP Fellowship is to further the expertise of physician assistants and nurse practitioners through specialized training in hospital medicine.
This one-year program exposes fellows to common and complex medical diagnoses, cultivating professionalism and leadership in the field of hospital medicine.

General Internal Medicine Research Fellowship
The General Internal Medicine Research Fellowship prepares physician-scientists to launch independent research careers while gaining clinical experience in hospital medicine. The two-to-three-year fellowship includes roughly 40 weeks of dedicated research, coursework and mentored training, as well as 10 weeks per year as a hospitalist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
