The WashU Medicine Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) was formed in 2025 through a collaboration between the fields of General Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospital Medicine.
This merger has combined the strengths of general internal medicine faculty to provide high-quality, equitable care for patients and their communities across the inpatient-outpatient spectrum, and allowed for us to expand our educational and research missions. The Division includes approximately 250 clinical faculty and allied clinicians, who provide care for more than 600 patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital (BJWCH) each day.

Faculty Development – Build and sustain a thriving community of internists and scientists with the skills, support, and protected time to lead long-term, high-impact careers – and become the division where the best clinician-educators, researchers, and innovators want to build their life’s work.
Education and Training – Develop the next generation of physicians and scientists through evidence-based, human-centered education and training, with a focus on (re)building the general internist pipeline.
Research & Scholarship – Serve as an engine for discoveries, innovation education, and system-level change in general medicine – producing work that doesn’t just get published but measurably saves lives and transforms how populations experience health.
